Software Deals

What you need to know about software deals

Claims of great deals on software are everywhere on the Internet, but how can you be sure the software deals you've found really are the best? And what can you do to avoid getting left high and dry in the event that you're unsatisfied with your purchase?

Where to Find Software Deals

To find the best software deal, you've got to dig a little deeper than typing a search term into Google and trusting that the results will actually lead you to the top bargains in cyberspace. Whether you're looking for tax software deals, antivirus software deals or low prices on other specialized types of computer programs, you're best to seek out comparison sites. These websites offers head-to-head comparisons of the prices offered by various vendors, as well as links to user feedback regarding those vendors so you can see if they have a trustworthy reputation.

Some sites offer special student software deals, giving you an even deeper discount if you can provide proof of your student status. Also, it's worth keeping in mind that you can find free software fairly easily as well, and this is an excellent option if you want to try out a particular program before buying it. Particularly with antivirus software, manufacturers often offer users the ability to enjoy a program's full functionality for a trial period. Once the trial period expires, you can either pay to keep using the program (which is usually charged as a flat fee, though some software charges annually) or download another free program with similar features. The disadvantage of the latter approach is that you'll have to keep downloading and reinstalling new software every time a trial period expires, which can quickly become tiresome.

Package Deals on Software Bundles

Another way to get a great software deal is by buying a package. When you do this, you get a discounted rate on each of the individual programs in the package. The Microsoft Office suite is, perhaps, the best-known example of a software bundle. It is possible to by Word or Excel as a stand-alone program, but for a moderate upgrade fee, you can get every piece of software in the Office suite—which is a much better bargain at the end of the day (provided, of course, you will use the other programs).

Many other manufacturers offer software bundles, so if you're interested in a number of programs, check to see if you can get them all for a discounted rate, either from the manufacturer or from a third-party vendor.
